    Summary: Magenta and CI Basic Red 9, a common constituent of magenta, were first produced commercially in the late nineteenth century in Germany. No adequate study was available to evaluate the carcinogenicity in experimental animals of magenta or of magenta I, magenta II or magenta III. Magenta containing CI Basic Red 9 is possibly carcinogenic to humans (Group 2B).
